Mycobacterium Avium Complex

چکیده

These two species are difficult to differentiate and therefore they are also referred to collectively as Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (MAI) . Although it might more logically be termed the Mycobacterium aviumintracellulare complex such nomenclature has not been adopted. They are both opportunistic pathogens that affect the immunocompromised, particularly HIV-positive individuals. They can also affect immunocompetent people, especially those with pre-existing lung disease. MAC is ubiquitous. However, only a minority of people exposed to MAC will acquire infection.

Gen-Probe Rapid Diagnostic System for the Mycobacterium avium complex does not distinguish between Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium paratuberculosis.

Three reference and 16 field strains of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis were tested with the Gen-Probe Mycobacterium avium complex DNA probe (Gen-Probe Inc., San Diego, Calif.). All reference strains and 12 of 16 field strains gave positive hybridization results with the probe. This study shows that the M. avium complex probe does not distinguish between M. avium and M. paratuberculosis and indi...

Comparative genomic hybridizations reveal genetic regions within the Mycobacterium avium complex that are divergent from Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis isolates.

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis is genetically similar to other members of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), some of which are nonpathogenic and widespread in the environment. We have utilized an M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis whole-genome microarray representing over 95% of the predicted coding sequences to examine the genetic conservation among 10 M. avium subsp. paratuberc...

Palatal Actinomycosis and Kaposi Sarcoma in an HIV-Infected Subject with Disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare Infection

Actinomyces and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare are facultative intracellular organisms, members of the bacterial order actinomycetales. Although Actinomyces can behave as copathogen when anatomic barriers are compromised, its coinfection with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare has not previously been reported. We present the first reported case of palatal actinomycosis co-infection with dis...
